RDCWorld1 (Real Dreamers Change the World) saw a lack of representation of people of color in main stream gaming / anime culture and major conventions they frequented and made moves to make their own. With this being their inaugural event I KNEW theiNoobProject had to get in on it and it did not disappoint.
Upon entering the con I was not impressed, there didn’t seem to be a lot of areas to explore. At every convention there are panel rooms, gaming, a vendor area and of course a section where all the guests sat and were prepared for small talk and some merchandise and autographs: DreamCon was NOT that con. We made our way to the convention floor and while the previously mentioned did exist none of guests were where their panels were on a Saturday evening. Further exploration saw something I had never seen before, something other conventions could use more of: Genuine interaction with the fan base. Guests of this con were far too busy interacting with the patrons of the convention to simply stay put in their designated areas… @RDCWorld1 was playing dodge ball with fans, Mark Phillips was going head to head with con goers to prove his point on anime battles in what was now dubbed as the “Anime Congress”, I handed over my personal GC controller to Desmond to watch him throw hands with Berleezy in Smash Brothers, that’s just the tip of what fan interaction we saw. My point is these people were the same as their patrons: at a convention to have a great time. Every guest was completely respectful as they were asked for pictures. We ran into our favorite RC unlockable Ben-San! who even though he was on his way to another activity made time with us to talk. (Check out our DreamCon2018 pics on Facebook and our Instagram)
Location:
In their hometown of Waco Texas, the convention Center filled the needs of what the cn presented. Hotels and restaurants were in ample supply with deals for con goers so this was a plus.
Highlights:
Dodge ball, wrestling shows, Fortnite, Smash4 tournaments (which the staff was very kind in changing the bracket so I didn’t face Trini in the preliminaries), King Vader, CalebCity, KimmieD, who showed us ALOT of love and hung out with us for like AWHILE and a closing shout out thanking my Buckies for coming as the furthest travelers (hailing from Ontario Canada).
With the announcement of new ticket sales for the next Dream Con taking place may 3rd – May 5th, the Buckies may not be able to return unfortunately but maybe this time Jay and more of the iNoob crew can. We’ll see ya there at DreamCon 2019!
