Central School was designed by Favrot and Livaudais and opened in 1912, teaching Lake Charles children until 1976 and housing soldiers during the 1941 maneuvers. Today it is the city's arts and humanities center on Kirby Street, with galleries, studios and a theatre, on a block shaded by oaks that schoolchildren planted.
